President Volodymyr Zelenskyy toured the northeastern Ukrainian region of Sumy on Thursday, making his first visit to the border area since Ukrainian forces entered Russian territory more than two weeks ago.
In a meeting with Ukraine's military commander, Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces have secured control of another settlement in Russia's Kursk region and captured more Russian prisoners of war. These prisoners, he hopes, can be exchanged for Ukrainians held by Russia.
However, the gains in Kursk come as Ukraine suffers losses in its eastern Donetsk region. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed on Thursday that its military now controls the village of Mezhove.
