Modi Advocates for Peace in Ukraine: Historic Visit Amid Ongoing Conflict
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine this week to discuss peaceful conflict resolution between Ukraine and Russia. This historic visit comes after his recent trip to Russia, where he called for peace amid ongoing hostilities. Modi aims to strengthen diplomatic relations and support Ukraine's war-torn economy.
India Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Wednesday that he would 'share perspectives' on the peaceful resolution of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia during his upcoming visit to Kyiv.
Modi, who departed for Poland on Wednesday, will arrive in Kyiv on Friday, marking the first visit to Ukraine by an Indian prime minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations three decades ago. His trip follows a recent visit to Moscow, where he confronted Russian President Vladimir Putin over the war that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
On the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in Italy last month, Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. 'As a friend and partner, we hope for an early return of peace and stability in the region,' Modi said in a statement before his departure. India has consistently urged both Ukraine and Russia to use dialogue and diplomacy to resolve their differences.
During Modi's two-day visit to Russia last month, a lethal strike hit a children's hospital in Kyiv. Modi expressed to Putin that the deaths of innocent children were 'painful and terrifying,' calling for the conflict's resolution. Ukrainian leaders have also sought India's support in rebuilding the nation's war-torn economy.
