Thousands of activists are set to descend on Chicago this week for the Democratic National Convention, drawing attention to pressing issues such as abortion rights, economic injustice, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
While Vice President Kamala Harris has been rallying supporters ahead of her acceptance of the Democratic nomination, progressive activists insist their mission remains unchanged. They learned from last month's Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and anticipate larger crowds and more significant demonstrations in Chicago, a city known for its rich history of social activism.
Demonstrations are planned for every day of the convention, with many activists prioritizing an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. Activities commenced on Sunday with an abortion rights march on Michigan Avenue. Organizer Linda Loew emphasized that reproductive rights are a global issue and criticized the U.S. government's financial support for wars over healthcare spending.
