The veteran Congress leader, aged 82, breathed his last at Tura Civil Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment.
Marak holds the distinction of being the first chief minister of Meghalaya to complete a full five-year term in 1993. He also served for the shortest duration as CM, a brief 12-day period in 1998 when the Congress-led coalition collapsed.
His political contributions extended to his tenure as the state Congress chief in 2003.
