Thailand's populist Pheu Thai party announced on Thursday its decision to nominate party leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra for Parliament's vote to determine the nation's new leader.
This development follows the removal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin by court order due to ethical violations. Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, carries forward the Shinawatra political legacy, which remains influential in Thai politics.
If she garners enough votes in the scheduled parliamentary session on Friday, Paetongtarn is set to become Thailand's second female prime minister and the third from the Shinawatra dynasty, following her father and aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.
