Vietnam's top leader To Lam will visit China next week in his first foreign trip since his appointment as general secretary of the ruling Communist Party earlier in August, according to three officials who spoke to Reuters.

This visit highlights the close ties between the two communist nations, which have strong economic and trade relationships despite occasional disputes over the South China Sea.

Lam, also Vietnam's state president, will meet with President Xi Jinping during his visit. The trip, set to begin on August 18, confirms Lam's inclination towards maintaining regional diplomacy. The visit comes in the wake of Lam's recent interactions with leaders from Laos, Cambodia, and Russia, demonstrating his active engagement in international affairs.
