The Election Commission conducted a comprehensive review of the preparedness for assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. The EC delegation, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, held strategic discussions with the union territory's chief secretary Atal Dullo and Police DGP R R Swain.
Key issues such as the deployment of security forces, provision of security to candidates, and campaign safety were meticulously deliberated. Following the meeting, the team proceeded to Jammu for further consultations with enforcement agencies, where they plan to brief the media on their findings.
The visit comes amid demands from political parties for immediate elections, marking the first assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir in a decade. The polls, initially due in early 2019, were postponed following the bifurcation of the state into union territories and a subsequent delimitation exercise completed in 2022. The Supreme Court has directed the election process to conclude by September 30.
