Vice President Kamala Harris did not agree to discuss imposing an arms embargo on Israel during an exchange with pro-Palestinian activists who are advocating for changes to U.S. policy towards its ally amid the ongoing Gaza war, an aide confirmed on Thursday. A statement from the Uncommitted National Movement had suggested Harris expressed openness to such discussions, but the aide clarified she did not.

The aide, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Harris did not express willingness to discuss an arms embargo. However, a campaign spokesperson noted that Harris affirmed to members of the Muslim and Palestinian community her commitment to continued engagement regarding the conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in significant casualties. Harris's national security adviser, Phil Gordon, reiterated on X that the Vice President is committed to Israel's right to self-defense and does not support an arms embargo.

Activists Layla Elabed and Abbas Alawieh from the Uncommitted group reported encouraging interactions with Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, although Harris did not commit to an arms embargo discussion. The ongoing conflict, sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel, has led to calls for the U.S. to condition its substantial military aid to Israel. Protests at a Harris rally and political maneuvering ahead of the Democratic National Convention highlight the divisiveness of the issue within the party.
