Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Thursday disclosed that certain central agencies are pressing for the re-imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the valley districts of the state.
Responding to a query from Naga People's Front (NPF) member Leishiyo Keishing in the Assembly, Singh stated that the evolving situation since May 3 last year has led these agencies to believe that normal laws are insufficient, prompting them to push for AFSPA's reinstatement.
Rejecting this pressure, Singh emphasized the importance of a humane approach to the unrest, which he attributed to emotional responses to recent violence. He underscored his long-standing opposition to AFSPA, citing its draconian nature, and called on central leaders to recognize the need to remove the Act from both hill and valley districts. Singh expressed hope for new criminal laws to effectively manage the situation.
