Barcelona Awaits Puigdemont's Controversial Return Amid Arrest Threat

Barcelona is bracing for the return of exiled Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont on Thursday, amid the likelihood of his arrest on outstanding embezzlement charges.

On Wednesday, Puigdemont announced his 'return trip from exile,' aiming to attend the Catalan parliament session to swear in the region's new leader, despite the risk of 'arbitrary and illegal' detention. The Catalan police have secured the parliament area in anticipation.

Puigdemont, now 61, fled to Belgium seven years ago. His party Junts, along with other separatist groups, plan a supportive reception at the Arc de Triomf. Opposing this, far-right Vox will stage a counter-protest, reflecting ongoing political tensions.
