Bangladesh's Interim Government: Nobel Laureate Yunus to Lead After Hasina's Abrupt Exit

Bangladesh's protest leaders anticipate finalizing members of an interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, by Wednesday, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure to India amid violent student-led protests.

The president of Bangladesh appointed Yunus late Tuesday, fulfilling a primary student demand, and underscored the urgency of finalizing the government to resolve the nation's crisis. This interim government is set to fill the power vacuum left by Hasina's exit, a move announced by the army chief on Monday amid escalating violence that claimed around 300 lives and injured thousands.

The new administration is also expected to organize elections soon. Yunus, currently in Paris for a medical procedure, is projected to return to Dhaka on Thursday. Student leader Nahid Islam, post the president's announcement, revealed that they have recommended a list of 10-15 members, including civil society and student representatives, for the interim government. The recommendations are expected to be finalized within 24 hours.
