The Tamil Progressives Alliance, representing Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka, announced its support for opposition leader Sajith Premadasa in the upcoming presidential election. TPA leader Mano Ganesan expressed confidence that Premadasa would address their community's issues. The election is expected to be a tight race among major candidates.
The Tamil Progressives Alliance, a significant political front for Indian-origin Tamils in Sri Lanka, declared on Tuesday its support for Sajith Premadasa, the main opposition candidate, in the upcoming presidential election.
Mano Ganesan, TPA leader, emphasized that the welfare of their community is a priority and expressed confidence in Premadasa's ability to address their concerns.
In contrast, the Ceylon Workers' Congress, led by Jeevan Thondaman and supporting the incumbent president Ranil Wickremesinghe, represents a different faction within the Indian-origin Tamil population, creating a split in votes.
The Elections Commission reported that 18 candidates have officially registered for the election, making it a three-way contest between Wickremesinghe, Premadasa, and Marxist JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
