The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has apprehended a Trinamool Congress leader, Anisur Rehman, from Deganga in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district for his alleged involvement in a multi-crore ration distribution scam. The arrest was confirmed by an official on Friday.
The central investigative agency detained TMC's Deganga block president Anisur Rehman and his elder brother after a grueling 14-hour interrogation session at their Kolkata office on Thursday evening.
According to an official statement, Rehman and his brother will be presented in a city court for a hearing following mandatory medical tests. The scam also led to the arrest of former state forest minister Jyotipriyo Mallick, to whom Rehman was reportedly 'very close.'
A summons has also been issued to Barik Biswas, a rice mill owner believed to be another close associate of the former minister. Biswas is scheduled for questioning on Friday at the ED's city office. During a raid conducted on Tuesday at Biswas's properties, officials seized over Rs 40 lakh in cash along with documents detailing his investments in the UAE.
