Genocide Case Against Peru's President Boluarte Shelved

Peru's prosecutor's office has definitively shelved a genocide case against President Dina Boluarte. The case was opened following anti-government protests in late 2022 and early 2023 that resulted in numerous deaths. However, ongoing investigations into related homicides and serious injuries continue against Boluarte and other officials.

In a significant development, Peru's prosecutor's office has permanently closed the genocide case filed against President Dina Boluarte, Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen confirmed on Tuesday.

The initial case had been initiated after anti-government protests led to multiple fatalities in late 2022 and early 2023, marking the onset of Boluarte's presidency. While the genocide allegations have been dismissed, the prosecutor's office stated that investigations into homicides and serious injuries tied to these events are ongoing against Boluarte and several officials.

A constitutional complaint has been lodged with Congress by the prosecutor's office regarding the deaths of 44 individuals and injuries to 116 during the confrontations between protesters and security forces. President Boluarte's legal counsel, Joseph Campos, expressed optimism that Congress would dismiss these cases, asserting that Boluarte made political decisions to manage the violent upheavals.

Boluarte has consistently denied the accusations, maintaining that security forces acted with restraint as protesters targeted public and private properties.
