In a move contrasting with the skepticism of many Latin American leaders and the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended congratulations to Nicolas Maduro on his reelection as Venezuela's President, state media reported on Tuesday.

Venezuelan electoral authorities declared Maduro the winner of a third term with 51% of the vote, continuing a quarter-century of socialist rule. However, opposition groups claimed to have evidence of winning the vote, sparking nationwide protests that police countered with tear gas in the capital, Caracas. In his congratulations, Xi emphasized the enduring friendship between China and Venezuela, stating that Maduro has guided his country on a developmental path suited to its national conditions, as reported by Xinhua.

Xi assured Maduro that China will steadfastly support Venezuela's efforts to uphold national sovereignty, dignity, and social stability, and opposes any external interference. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson reaffirmed that the international community should respect the choice of the Venezuelan people and expressed confidence in their ability to manage internal affairs. Meanwhile, the U.S., under the Biden administration, accused Maduro of election manipulation, and Peru dismissed Venezuelan diplomats. Support for Maduro also came from Russia, Cuba, Honduras, and Bolivia.
