The race to become Kamala Harris's vice presidential running mate has intensified, as Governors Roy Cooper of North Carolina and Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan have withdrawn from consideration.
Harris is now evaluating a range of candidates, most of whom are white and male, in an effort to balance the ticket for broader voter appeal. Cooper announced his withdrawal in a statement, citing poor timing for both North Carolina and himself.
On CBS Mornings, Whitmer confirmed she is not part of the vetting process and intends to continue her term as governor until 2026. This weekend, Harris engaged in private discussions with various candidates, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and others under consideration, such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.
Buttigieg, regarded as a long shot even by his supporters, has communicated privately with Harris and expressed his desire for the role during a call with donors from his 2020 presidential campaign.
