Vice President Kamala Harris opened up a marginal two-percentage-point lead over Republican Donald Trump following President Joe Biden's decision to end his re-election campaign and pass the torch to her, a Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed. The new poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, showed Harris leading Trump 44% to 42%, within the poll's margin of error.

Poll results highlight Harris' growing popularity, with 56% of registered voters considering her "mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges," surpassing Trump and significantly outpacing Biden. Amidst this growing support, attention now shifts to Harris' choice of running mate.

While some within Trump's camp downplayed Harris' polling bump as temporary, the most recent data supports the rationale for Biden stepping aside, allowing Harris to secure the Democratic nomination. The survey also indicated that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters agree with backing Harris now, setting a clear mandate for her campaign.
