Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have endorsed U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential bid, marking a significant move by top Democrats to rally behind a new leader against Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming November election. The endorsement was announced five days after President Joe Biden, 81, decided to withdraw his reelection bid amid rising internal party opposition. Recent opinion polls show Harris beginning to chip away at Trump's lead.

In a phone call shared via an online video by the campaign, Obama expressed his pride in endorsing Harris. 'Michelle and I couldn't be prouder to endorse you and support your journey to the Oval Office,' Obama told her. The former first lady echoed similar sentiments, calling Harris' potential victory 'historic.'

Harris, visibly elated, thanked the Obamas, highlighting the importance of their friendship and support. 'Thank you both. It means so much. And we're gonna have some fun with this too,' said Harris, who stands poised to become the first Black woman and Asian American president if she wins in November.

As the first Black U.S. president, Barack Obama, and Michelle remain high-profile figures within the Democratic Party. A Reuters/Ipsos poll earlier this month revealed that Michelle Obama's favorability rating stood at 55% among Americans and 94% among Democrats, surpassing Harris' ratings. Obama's backing could be crucial in bolstering Harris' campaign and fundraising efforts. The party has already unified behind Harris, who secured enough delegate support on Monday to clinch her nomination.

Meanwhile, Trump is scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Florida resort following Netanyahu's discussions with Biden and Harris in Washington. Harris advocated for a Gaza ceasefire during her talks with Netanyahu, calling for an end to the conflict initiated on Oct. 7, when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel. The ensuing Israeli response has caused substantial casualties and displacement in Gaza, drawing criticism toward the Biden administration for its handling of the situation.

Trump also voiced his desire for an end to the war, telling Fox News that Israel was being 'decimated with this publicity.'
