The U.S. House of Representatives is forming a bipartisan task force to investigate the shooting of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to Republican and Democratic leaders on Tuesday.

The panel, which will include seven Republicans and six Democrats, aims to recommend reforms for relevant government agencies and will have subpoena authority. This initiative follows harsh criticism of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) after the attempted assassination on July 13. During a House Oversight Committee hearing, Republican chairman James Comer and top Democrat Jamie Raskin, usually at odds, jointly called for USSS Director Kimberly Cheatle to resign.

'The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump's life are shocking,' Johnson said, adding that the task force would act swiftly to prevent future incidents. The House is expected to vote on a resolution this week to establish the task force and assign its members.

USSS Director Cheatle, who described the shooting as the agency's most significant operational failure in a decade, has rejected calls for her resignation.
