Donald Trump has pledged to end Ukraine's war with Russia after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reached out to congratulate him on his Republican presidential nomination.

The two leaders spoke over the phone on Friday, marking Trump's first conversation with a foreign leader since becoming the Republican Party's presidential nominee. According to Trump, the call highlighted the successful Republican National Convention and his nomination for President of the United States.

"I appreciate President Zelenskyy for reaching out because I, as your next President of the United States, will bring peace to the world and end the war that has cost so many lives and devastated countless innocent families," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

Zelenskyy condemned a recent assassination attempt on Trump during the call and spoke about the importance of American unity. In addition, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the US's support in strengthening Ukraine's resistance against Russian aggression.

"Ukraine will always be grateful to the United States for its help in strengthening our ability to resist Russian terror," Zelenskyy wrote on X. "We agreed with President Trump to discuss at a personal meeting what steps can make peace fair and truly lasting."

Trump's interactions with foreign leaders are gaining attention as he campaigns for the presidency. A potential Trump victory could alter the transatlantic support for Ukraine that President Joe Biden has established. Recently, Trump announced Ohio Senator J D Vance as his running mate, whose past statements have shown indifference towards Ukraine's fate.
