Former President Donald Trump adopted a noticeably softer tone during his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination on Thursday night, offering a respite for some conservative voters.

"He's much improved," said Dave Struthers, a farmer from Collins, Iowa. "I've always found him to be too egotistical. But tonight, he's different."

Despite his past divisive rhetoric, Trump appeared with a white bandage over his ear, a reminder of a recent assassination attempt, and called for an end to political discord. Nevertheless, familiar talking points were reiterated, including criticisms of Democrats and warnings about the U.S.-Mexico border.

Struthers, who supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, appreciated the conversational tone, noting it felt more like a dialogue with the American people. Alex Bueneman, a technician from Missouri, also welcomed the moderation, while John Frank, a designer from Milwaukee, saw no difference.
