California Rep. Adam Schiff has become the highest-profile Democrat to advocate for President Joe Biden to drop his reelection bid. The Democratic Party has pushed ahead with plans for a virtual vote to formally make Biden its nominee in the first week of August.

The decision to schedule a roll call follows nearly 20 Democratic members of Congress urging Biden to withdraw from the race after a disappointing debate against Republican former President Donald Trump last month. ABC News reported new details about Biden's private meeting with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, where Schumer reportedly suggested Biden bow out for the good of the party and country.

Amid this backdrop, Biden tested positive for COVID-19 while traveling in Las Vegas. Schiff's call for Biden to step aside has added to the internal pressures, even as Biden's campaign points to support from key members of Congress. The Democratic National Committee aims to hold a virtual vote before the convention in August.
