Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has ignited a new controversy within the European Union following his recent foreign visits. His world tour, which included stops in Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, China, and the United States, was labeled a "peace mission" aimed at brokering an end to Russia's war in Ukraine.
Orbán's government diverged from the majority of EU policies by refusing to supply Kyiv with weapons and by threatening to block financial assistance to Ukraine. These actions have angered other EU leaders, who were not informed in advance of Orbán's trips to Moscow and Beijing.
In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned Orbán's actions as appeasement towards Russia, insisting that only unity and determination will lead to a lasting peace in Ukraine. The fallout has led some EU countries to consider boycotting upcoming informal meetings in Budapest.
