Biden Calls for Unity After Trump Shooting Incident
President Joe Biden urged Americans to lower the political temperature and recall their shared humanity after the wounding of Donald Trump by a would-be assassin. Using the formal setting of the Oval Office, Biden emphasized the need to avoid normalizing violence, urging collective responsibility in cooling down political rhetoric.
U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation from the White House Oval Office on Sunday, urging Americans to de-escalate political tensions after Donald Trump was wounded by a would-be assassin. Biden stressed the importance of remembering shared humanity despite political differences.
In a seven-minute speech, Biden firmly stated, "We can't allow this violence to be normalized. The political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. It's time to cool it down. We all have a responsibility to do this." This was Biden's third Oval Office address on major issues since taking office in 2021.
Biden's plea for unity comes as he navigates his own re-election campaign amid concerns about his age. The incident shifted Biden's campaign focus to future issues, pulling down attack ads soon after the shooting. Biden concluded, "Hate must have no safe harbor."
