U.S. President Joe Biden used the formal setting of the White House Oval Office on Sunday to stress the need for divided Americans to come together after a would-be assassin wounded Republican rival Donald Trump. Trump's shooting "calls on all of us to take a step back," Biden said. Thankfully, Trump was not seriously injured, he noted.
This was Biden's third use of the Oval Office to comment on issues of major importance to Americans since he took office in 2021. Biden's appearance allowed him to demonstrate the power of incumbency, a crucial image as he battles members within his Democratic Party who are concerned about his age and mental acuity for another term.
In previous addresses, Biden commented on the Gaza and Ukraine conflicts and averted a U.S. debt ceiling crisis with Republicans. While gun violence is prevalent in the United States, political violence remains rare. Four U.S. presidents have been assassinated, while several had close calls. Multiple presidential candidates have also faced attempts on their lives, some fatal.
Biden and his campaign team are charting a new course in the aftermath of the shooting of Trump, whom Biden views as a threat to American democracy if re-elected on Nov. 5. The campaign halted verbal attacks on Trump to focus on the future, pulling down television ads and suspending other political communications within hours of the incident.
