The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman armed with an AR-style rifle managed to get close enough to injure former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday. This incident is considered a monumental failure of the agency's core duties.
The FBI identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks, 20, was fatally shot by Secret Service personnel after firing multiple rounds from an elevated position outside the rally venue.
President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review of national security at the rally and has directed the Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention. Investigators are swiftly working to determine the shooter's motive, amid widespread calls for a thorough investigation.
