Kamlesh Thakur, the wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has made history by winning the Dehra assembly by-election. For the first time, a husband and wife duo are both members of the house.
The by-election saw no independent candidates winning, resulting in a Congress-dominated assembly with the party's strength restored to 40 seats. After four by-election victories in June, the government has bolstered its stability in the 68-member Vidhan Sabha.
In past elections, records have been set with former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his son Vikramaditya Singh being the oldest and youngest members in 2017. Veteran leaders Sarla Sharma and her husband Parasram never served simultaneously, though both remained politically active.
With Kamlesh Thakur's victory, the number of women members in the house has doubled, previously with BJP's Reena Kashyap being the lone female member from the Pachhad constituency.
