Manish Kumar Verma has been named the National General Secretary of Janata Dal-United (JDU) by party President and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The official announcement came via a press statement from former General Secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan, who is also a Bihar Legislative Council member.

The press release stated, 'The National President of Janata Dal (United) Nitish Kumar (Chief Minister of Bihar) has appointed Shri Manish Kumar Verma as the National General Secretary of the Janata Dal (United) with immediate effect. Thanking You!' Verma is a former IAS officer and a close confidant of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

On Tuesday, Verma formally joined JDU in Patna after taking voluntary retirement from the civil service in 2018. He has since worked closely with CM Nitish Kumar.

Verma's entry into the party was marked by a ceremony attended by JDU's working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, along with state water resources minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary. Verma shares a close relationship with Nitish Kumar, with both hailing from Nalanda district and belonging to the Kurmi community.

A civil servant of the 2000 batch, Verma served as district magistrate in Patna and Purnea. His tenure also included a role in the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority. He has been active in JD(U) organizational roles, significantly contributing during the recent Lok Sabha elections where the party won 12 out of 16 seats contested in Bihar.

As Bihar gears up for legislative elections, likely to be held by October-November 2025, Verma's appointment comes at a crucial time.
