Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday requested Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to verify several claims made by the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, during his speech.
After Gandhi's provocative 'not Hindu' remark aimed at the BJP, Shah demanded that he apologize to Parliament and the nation.
'He has categorically said that those who call themselves Hindus engage in violence. Crores of people in the country proudly call themselves Hindus. Are they all speaking about violence? Linking violence to any religion, that too by somebody holding a constitutional position... I believe he should apologize,' the home minister stated.
Gandhi clarified that his comments were aimed at the BJP and the RSS.
Shah, responding to Gandhi's wide range of allegations against the government concerning issues like the Agnipath scheme and compensation during Ayodhya's revamp, called for verification of these claims amid accusations that Gandhi was misleading Parliament.
Quoting the Lok Sabha rule book, Shah said that if a member's factual comments are challenged, the Chair can order verification. Speaking on behalf of the treasury benches, he urged Speaker Birla to verify Gandhi's assertions.
