The Congress party has once again shown confidence in MLC Pradnya Satav, re-nominating her for the upcoming July 12 biennial elections to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the MLA quota.

Tuesday, July 2, marks the final day for filing nominations for the 11 available seats in the Upper House of the state legislature.

The vacancies come as current members are set to retire on July 27. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will participate in the voting process.

Presently, the Congress has two retiring MLCs but can realistically elect only one new candidate due to its current assembly strength.

Pradnya Satav, widow of late Congress MP Rajeev Satav, was unopposed in her 2021 election which followed the death of sitting Congress MLC Sharad Ranpise.

The ruling BJP has named five candidates, including former state minister Pankaja Munde, who lost in the recent Lok Sabha elections from Beed, Maharashtra.

The NCP, led by Sharad Pawar and an ally of Congress, has pledged support to Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) candidate Jayant Patil.

With 14 vacancies in the 288-member assembly, the electoral college now consists of 274 members, making the quota for each winning candidate 23.

These elections precede the upcoming assembly polls, scheduled for October.
