Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday took charge as the 30th Chief of the Army Staff following the retirement of Gen Manoj Pande. Gen Dwivedi brings extensive operational experience on the frontiers with China and Pakistan, having served as the Vice Chief of the Army.

Prior to his stint as Vice Chief, Gen Dwivedi was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command. His career, spanning nearly 40 years, includes serving in various command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments.

As the new Chief of the 1.3 million-strong Army, Gen Dwivedi will address security challenges along the Line of Actual Control with China and will coordinate with the Navy and Air Force on the government's theatre command plans.

An alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa, Gen Dwivedi was commissioned into 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. His command roles include the regiment, brigade, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps.
