Chennai—In a resolute stance against the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami led party MLAs and workers in a hunger strike on Thursday, demanding a CBI investigation. The protest, which took place at Rajarathinam stadium, was to condemn the state Assembly's refusal to discuss the issue.
The AIADMK legislators, donning black shirts in a sign of defiance, began their fast at 9 am. Palaniswami, in a social media post, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister M K Stalin. He criticized Stalin for his reluctance to address the hooch deaths, which have reportedly claimed over 60 lives, and for not visiting Kallakurichi.
DMDK chief Premalatha Vijayakanth lent support to the protest, demanding the resignation of Minister for Prohibition and Excise, S Muthusamy. She decried police restrictions on the protestors and insisted that only a CBI probe could reveal the facts behind the tragedy.
