Nepal has swiftly moved to nominate new ambassadors for eight strategic countries, including India, following the recent recall of its incumbents.
Former chief secretary and Nepal's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Lokdarshan Regmi, has been appointed as Nepal's new ambassador to India, according to Cabinet sources. Regmi has held several high-ranking positions, including Home Secretary and Finance Secretary.
The decision, confirmed by Nepal's Cabinet on Friday, comes shortly after the government recalled ambassadors from 11 countries, a move initiated three months after Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' ended his alliance with the Nepali Congress and formed a coalition with former prime minister KP Sharma Oli's CPN-UML.
Chandra Ghimire, former Commerce and Industry Secretary, will replace Sridhar Khatri as ambassador to the United States, while Bijan Pant has been named the new ambassador to the United Kingdom. All nominees must undergo parliamentary hearings before formal appointment by the president.
