Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury dismissed reports on Friday that he resigned as president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee. He asserted that, according to Congress' constitution, all state unit presidents became provisional after Mallikarjun Kharge was elected national president.

"I am the provisional president of the state Congress. Since the day Mallikarjun Kharge became the All India Congress President, no other state in India has had a designated president," Chowdhury stated. He expressed surprise at media speculation about his resignation.

As per the Congress' organizational structure, the national president has the authority to appoint new regional unit heads. Kharge assumed the position in 2022, and keeping the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in mind, the party avoided changes in state leadership.

Ghulam Ahmad Mir, AICC General Secretary, reviewed the party's performance in West Bengal and indicated that a decision regarding a new state president will involve comprehensive consultations.
