Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday offered all cooperation to Mongolia to train its parliamentarians and officials as well as develop related institutions in the north-central Asian region. Birla, who is on a visit to Mongolia, called on President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai and Speaker of the 'Great Khural' Gombojavyn Zandanshatar. During his meetings with the Mongolian Prime Minister and Speaker, Birla suggested that the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) could organise capacity building programmes for Mongolian parliamentarians, officials and staff. He said the Indian Parliament was ready to cooperate in the fields of developing Mongolia's parliamentary institutions and upgrading research and library facilities.
The Lok Sabha Speaker also highlighted that the shared glorious heritage of Buddhism underpins the ties between India and Mongolia.
He said India was determined to further strengthen and broaden its strategic partnership with Mongolia, adding that he was happy to note that India was playing the role of a dependable partner in the economic development of Mongolia. Birla also toured the oil refinery project in Mongolia, the largest project undertaken by India abroad, which he said is a testimony to the close partnership between the two nations.
The refinery, being built with India's assistance, is vital to Mongolia's energy security. It is the largest project undertaken abroad by India under the Line of Credit programme and reflects the close economic and strategic partnership between the two countries.
Birla also expressed confidence that Mongolia will support India's candidature as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2028-29.
