Tanzania’s government is planning to construct 30,000 affordable houses across the country. The project is a part of an implementation of election manifesto of Chama Cha Mapinduzi, the dominant ruling party.

The report has been confirmed by William Lukuvi, the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlement Development. The 63-year old leader said that the houses would be constructed by state-owned National Housing Corporation. “The intention of the government is to provide affordable housing for its people. Construction of the houses will go in tandem with the improvement of infrastructure in the areas, including roads, schools and health centres, Lukuvi said.

Tanzania still lacks good quality and affordable housing. According to Construction Review Online, the current housing deficit is estimated at three million housing units valued at USD 180 billion coupled with a 200,000-unit annual demand with a projected combined cost of USD 12 billion.

Numbeo-released 2018 Cost of Living study showed that residents in Dar es Salaam pay the largest chunk of their earnings around 31 percent on house rents. The show also revealed that atleast 27.6 percent of an average Tanzanian’s earning is spent on paying rent.
