Electric production in Algeria to increase to 33,000 MW from 21,000 MW by 2022

Algeria is all set to boost its electricity production capacity to 33,000 megawatt by 2022 against the current 21,000 megawatt. The investment is likely to meet Algeria’s energy demands while the surplus will be exported to other countries.

“We can be proud of multiplying by four electricity production capacity (nearly 21,000 megawatt) against 6,000 megawatt in 1999. We also intend to commission other projects to reach 33,000 megawatt in 2022,” Mustapha Guitouni, the Energy Minister said.

According to Mohamed Arkab, Chief Executive Officer, Sonelgaz Group, the company has provided training over 300 specialized engineers as they prepare for the implementation of the programme that seeks to provide installation of 22,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030. Currently, the group has generated 400 megawatt of solar and wind power that has been connected to the national grid. The government of Algeria also summoned for tenders for construction of solar photo voltaic power plants with a capacity of 150 MW, as reported by Construction Review Online.

Algeria has an enormous potential for renewable energy. It enjoys a sunshine duration of 2,000 to 6,000 Wh/m2, which represents 10 times the world consumption. It makes this North African country one of the largest solar energy sources in the world.
