Nepal's Prime Minister Sparks Debate Over Alleged Border Encroachments

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah stirred controversy by claiming that Nepal has encroached on Indian territory and vice versa. His remarks were met with criticism and demands for clarity, especially regarding ongoing disputes over areas like Lipulekh and Kalapani. Nepal and India plan historical and expert assistance to resolve the issues.

In a recent parliamentary session, Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah ignited a debate by asserting that Nepal has encroached on territories within India, and vice versa. His statements aimed at addressing long-standing border disputes inadvertently provoked political controversy.

Shah mentioned that both nations have agreed to seek guidance from historians and experts to resolve these issues diplomatically. The contentious areas include Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani, which are claimed by both countries. Interestingly, hours after Shah's remarks, Nepal's Foreign Ministry clarified that his comments pertained to 'no-man's land' and cross-border occupation, not territorial claims.

The Prime Minister's comments were met with backlash from opposition lawmakers and former Nepalese diplomats, who expressed skepticism over the claims of mutual encroachments. They stressed the need for supporting evidence or retraction of his statement. Former diplomats argued against the notion of Nepal encroaching on Indian territories, pointing out that past disputes have been largely resolved.

Despite the uproar, Shah emphasized the importance of reviewing historical facts in concert with neighboring countries to amicably settle the disputes. Coinciding with these developments, a delegation from the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party is scheduled to visit India for political and diplomatic discussions.
