Derek O'Brien, a prominent member of the Trinamool Congress in the Rajya Sabha, raised concerns on Saturday regarding the recent attack on Abhishek Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP, in West Bengal. The incident occurred while Banerjee was visiting the family of a person killed in post-election violence.
O'Brien took to social media to express his frustrations, questioning the state's security measures and accusing the BJP of orchestrating the attack on Banerjee. He urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to address the issue, highlighting that Banerjee's security was allegedly withdrawn on the day of vote counting.
The attack reportedly involved locals in Sonarpur, where Banerjee visited families affected by the violence. Stones, shoes, and eggs were thrown at him amid chants accusing him of being a thief. TMC officials suggest the attack was a politically motivated effort by BJP supporters to disrupt Banerjee's visit.
