The BJP launched an attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, following the Supreme Court's decision to endorse the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The party accused Gandhi of resisting the measure in defense of 'illegal voters'.
In its judgment, the Supreme Court affirmed the Election Commission's authority to oversee the Special Intensive Revision, emphasizing its importance for ensuring free and fair elections. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticized Gandhi in a social media post, alleging that by opposing this exercise, the Congress party favored illegal entrants over legitimate Indian voters.
Bhandari suggested that the Congress opposition to the revision process was akin to an 'anti-national act', questioning whether Gandhi would apologize for allegedly disparaging Indian democracy. The Supreme Court ruling came while addressing various petitions challenging the initiative in Bihar, stating that the Election Commission operated within its legal bounds under the Constitution.
The court, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, explained that initial concerns about exclusion in the process could be alleviated through proper safeguards, and affirmed the constitutionality of the electoral roll revision.
