The Manipur branch of the Congress has called out the state and Union governments for their alleged failure to utilize constitutional powers to address the state's escalating violence. This accusation came after three purported militants killed three church leaders in Kangpokpi, and another man was slain in Noney district.
Speaking at a press conference, O Ibobi Singh, Manipur's Congress chief, condemned the acts, noting the killing of individuals from different communities. He questioned the central government's silence on the ongoing killings and pointed out that various communities seem to be permitted to retaliate violently.
Singh further highlighted the 2023 ethnic violence, referencing Supreme Court criticism of the state's law and order collapse. He urged government inclusion of constitutional powers to quell unrest, which has led to 260 deaths and mass displacement in Manipur since May 2023.
