Japan Eyes Defence Equipment Transfer to the Philippines
Japan is planning to transfer Abukuma-class destroyers and TC-90 aircraft to the Philippines. The two countries aim to enhance their defence collaboration under new export rules. While no timeline has been disclosed, they will form a working group to finalize policy and operational requirements.
Japan is gearing up to supply Abukuma-class destroyers and TC-90 aircraft to the Philippines. This announcement follows Tokyo's significant revision of its defence export regulations, marking one of the most substantial changes in decades.
During a visit to Manila, Japan's Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi expressed the country's commitment to bolstering defence technology ties with the Philippines through a new framework governing the transfer of military equipment. Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro echoed Koizumi's sentiments, stating that both nations have reached an agreement in principle to facilitate the transfer and are now delving into the finer details.
Although an exact timeline for the equipment transfer has not been set, both ministers have agreed to establish a working group dedicated to formulating the necessary policy and operational guidelines. This collaboration comes as both Japan and the Philippines, key U.S. allies, find themselves involved in maritime conflicts with China in the East and South China Seas.
