Taiwan President Lai Ching-te returned from an unexpected visit to Eswatini, following China's influence in canceling earlier plans. China, considering Taiwan its territory, has pressured nations to cut ties with Taiwan. Lai defies China's claims, asserting Taiwan's sovereignty and engagement rights.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te returned to the island on Tuesday following an unforeseen diplomatic mission to Eswatini. This visit came after Taiwan's administration accused China of thwarting earlier travel arrangements.
China, which views Taiwan as a province, has intensified pressure to isolate it diplomatically. Beijing insists countries cease official interactions with Taiwan, yet the island's government fiercely contests this stance.
During Lai's visit, the aircraft detoured via the Indian Ocean due to denied overflight permissions from Mauritius, Seychelles, and Madagascar, highlighting geopolitical tensions. Lai underscores Taiwan's right to global engagement, openly challenging Beijing's sovereignty claims.
