In a tragic incident, Chicago police officer John Bartholomew, aged 38, was fatally shot by a suspect at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital while in custody, authorities confirmed. The incident unfolded on Saturday as the officer, a decade-long veteran of the force, succumbed to his injuries just before 1 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The shooting also left another officer critically wounded. Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling revealed that the wounded officer, aged 57, with 21 years of service, is currently in critical condition, described as ''fighting for his life.'' Both officers had transported the suspect, initially arrested on suspicion of robbery, to the hospital for observation.
The suspect managed a daring escape, with surveillance footage capturing him running naked with electrodes attached to his chest. Despite hospital protocols, which included being wanded upon arrival and escorted by law enforcement, the suspect managed to obtain a firearm and shoot at the officers before fleeing. Three weapons have been recovered in the ongoing investigation.
