Legal Battle Intensifies: Amritpal Singh's Extended Detention in Assam

The Punjab government filed a fresh plea to keep MP Amritpal Singh detained in Assam's Dibrugarh jail, as his NSA detention ends on April 22. The government cited security concerns for continuing his confinement. The court is set to review this plea amidst ongoing legal challenges surrounding his detention.

In a new legal maneuver, the Punjab government has filed a petition with the Punjab and Haryana High Court to continue holding Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh in Dibrugarh jail, Assam, under the National Security Act (NSA). His current detention expires on April 22.

The state's legal counsel informed Chief Justice Sheel Nagu's bench of the alleged security risks, leading to the plea that Amritpal's detention be extended. Amritpal's legal representative, Iman Singh Khara, stated the government's position that he should stay imprisoned pending fresh proceedings.

The matter has surfaced amid ongoing legal disputes, with the high court rejecting Amritpal's challenge to a prior detention order. Amritpal has been tied to the 2023 Ajnala Police Station attack, prompting serious allegations, including anti-national activities and associations with criminal elements.
