Prosecutors asserted that Rivera intentionally shot Detective Diller, ignoring lawful commands, and argued that the evidence showed Rivera prepared the weapon deliberately. However, Rivera's lawyer maintained that the gun went off accidentally during a police scuffle.

Rivera, 36, will be sentenced on April 27 and potentially faces life imprisonment. The incident marked the first NYPD officer death on duty in two years and drew significant attention, including at Diller's funeral attended by Trump and thousands of others.
