Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced vocal protests during a visit to Australia's largest mosque on Friday for Eid al-Fitr prayers. Attendees expressed anger over his perceived support of Israel amid its ongoing offensive in Gaza, after a Hamas attack in 2023, prompting a diplomatic dilemma for the government.
Video footage captured the moment protesters interrupted the event at Lakemba Mosque in Sydney, roughly 15 minutes after Albanese and Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke arrived to partake in Ramadan's end celebrations. Protesters accused Albania and Burke of complicity in alleged war crimes.
Despite organizers' attempts to restore order by emphasizing the day's festivities, tensions remained high, culminating in security removing a vocal heckler. This follows recent protests against the government's invitation to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, after attacks on Sydney's Jewish community.
