French Court Upholds Shein's Operation Amid Controversy

A Paris Court of Appeal has rejected France's attempt to suspend the Chinese online platform Shein, following a scandal over banned items on its marketplace. Shein has since removed controversial products and strengthened marketplace controls, maintaining communication with French and European authorities to ensure customer safety.

France's attempt to halt Chinese online platform Shein was thwarted by a Paris Court of Appeal on Thursday. This decision comes after a prior ruling against the French government's request to suspend Shein's operations in December.

The controversy began when France's consumer watchdog discovered sex dolls resembling children and banned weapons available on Shein's marketplace. Following this revelation, the government sought to suspend the platform. However, the court deemed a three-month suspension excessively harsh, prompting an appeal by the authorities.

In response to the findings, Shein removed all sex dolls and globally suspended its adult products category on November 3. The company stated after the ruling that it has considerably enhanced its controls over sellers and products to ensure a secure shopping experience for French consumers.

Shein continues to maintain an open dialogue with French and European regulators.
