Transforming Thirst: The Jal Jeevan Mission's Milestone Achievement

The Jal Jeevan Mission has significantly improved access to tap water for rural households, reaching over 81% penetration. Launched in 2019, it aims for universal safe drinking water access by 2030 and is extended to 2028. Measures include community water purification to counter arsenic and fluoride contamination.

In a major achievement, more than 12.58 crore additional rural households have been connected with tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission, according to the Rajya Sabha. Since the mission's inception in August 2019, access to tap water in rural India has increased dramatically, reaching over 81% of households.

The mission aims to ensure universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water by 2030, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 6.1. The government's commitment is evident in the mission's extension until 2028, announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

States and Union Territories are urged to set up community water purification plants, especially in areas affected by arsenic and fluoride, to guarantee safe drinking water until JJM-compliant schemes are fully operational.
