The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken active measures to address allegations of illegal tree felling in South Delhi's Chhatarpur area. Concerning claims have emerged about unauthorized tree cutting among several khasra numbers in Chhatarpur's Ambedkar Colony, reportedly by a private individual acting under the cover of night.

During a recent hearing, a bench comprising NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava and expert member A Senthil Vel emphasized the gravity of the situation, citing potential violations of the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act. Complaints had previously been directed to the forest range officer, prompting an interim restraining order last October, but unlawful activities allegedly continued despite these efforts.

Determined to reveal the factual circumstances on the ground, the tribunal has appointed a joint committee. This team, featuring representatives from the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) South, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the district magistrate of South Delhi, will investigate the extent of the damage and identify those responsible. The results of this inquiry, including any recommendations, are expected within six weeks. Authorities, including the Delhi government and various pollution control bodies, have also been tasked with providing their responses. The proceedings are set to resume on April 6.
